Autumn has just set in Kuwait, bringing with it refreshing breeze and genial sunshine. On October 31, 2021, young diplomats of the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait headed by Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang visited the UN House, the place where the United Nations in Kuwait is locally situated. Ambassador Li and UN Secretary General’s Representative and UN Resident Coordinator Dr. Tarek El Sheikh planted a friendship tree together to mark the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations.

In his friendly talk with Dr. Tarek, Ambassador Li noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s lawful seat in the UN, and with full participation in and support for the cause of the UN, China has made continuous contributions to world peace and development over the past five decades. China, with concrete actions, has lived up to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and has served as an important builder of world peace, the biggest contributor to global development and a firm defender of international order.

Noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping has recently attended and addressed a succession of key conferences including the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, the Leaders’ Summit of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the 2nd UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference and the 16th G20 Leaders’ Summit, Ambassador Li pointed out that to meet global challenges like COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative, calling for the international community to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and achieve more robust, greener and more balanced global development, so as to build a global community of development with a shared future. This demonstrates again China’s commitment to making greater contributions to the cause of the UN as a major responsible nation, he added.

Dr. Tarek highly praised China’s contributions to promoting world peace and development and supporting the cause of the UN over the years, and applauded the Global Development Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping as an important guidance for global governance and development. He said it was pleasant to plant a friendship tree together with visitors from the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait to mark the 50th anniversary of restoration of the PRC’s lawful seat in the UN, adding that this was a vivid example of China’s commitment to deeper friendship with the UN and strong support for the UN’s mission. He believed that with China’s full support and active participation, the global community is sure to forge deeper cooperation in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development, thus working together to accomplish the sustainable development goals of the UN.

They then came to the backyard of the UN House and planted a young olive tree that is usually seen as a symbol of peace and friendship. Both sides envisioned that friendship and cooperation between China and the UN would be everlasting, just as the olive tree would grow taller and stronger with deep roots.

In addition, Ambassador Li and young diplomats of the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait visited the exhibition hall of the UN House in the company of Dr. Tarek. They looked back on the efforts of the United Nations in the State of Kuwait in the recent years for humanitarianism, peace and safety, and sustainable development.
